Hurricane Construction is a General Contractor specializing in remodeling, windows, siding, decks, pavers and pools.
What Makes Hurricane Construction Unique?
We are a design/build firm. On window, siding and door projects you typically do not need a set of building plans, but on a deck remodel or an addition, you need a set of plans. We sit down with every owner and ask them to give us an outline of their dream. We then take these ideas and create a detailed plan for their project. We make suggestions of only the best materials, enter a contract and then go on to complete that vision.
About half of our business comes from owners who have lot coverage, CAMA or other regulatory issues. We have over a decade dealing with these complex problems. The OBX has numerous municipalities who all look at the rules a little differently; we help navigate the process. We have never been turned down by a regulatory agency. We help coordinate the design and permitting process with the local regulatory agency to ensure our customer gets the results they desire.
What Types of Contracting Does Your Firm Perform?
We have never limited ourselves to one aspect of the business or where we work. We work from Hatteras to Corolla all the way to Edenton and Moyock. Most owners do not want to deal with multiple contractors; there are too many conflicts and nobody takes responsibility. Many of our projects are multi-faceted and we are a one-stop shop; a pool with new decking, an addition with a driveway, replacing windows and siding and needing interior work. If it involves your home, we can build it. We can remodel fiberglass and concrete pools, we can build a new addition to your home, or remodel what is there. We are always up for a challenge.
Any Examples of Premier Projects?
We take pride in all our work. Two projects stand out, but for different reasons. The first is The Family Courtyard at The College of William & Mary. I’m a graduate of W&M and enjoyed designing and building a premier project at my alma mater. The second is an oceanfront concrete pool that is built on concrete piles out of the ground to be even with the second-floor decking. It has a vanishing edge and a wrap-around deck.
You Talk About Quality, Give Us An Example?
Code is a minimum, why would you want a contractor who runs around and claims, “I build to code.” Instead, you should want a contractor that understands the harsh oceanfront conditions of the Outer Banks and builds with the best solution in mind. For instance, most homes that are 15 years or older likely have moisture intrusion issues with their windows and siding. When you remove the old, do you replace with the same materials they used 15 years ago, or do you use modern moisture barriers, superior sheathing, the best flashing around the windows, 316 stainless steel nails/screws on all exteriors? We know the best products and we use them on every job. With us, quality materials and workmanship come first so that our work lasts for decades.
We service these areas:
Currituck • Corolla • Duck • Southern Shores • Kitty Hawk • Kill Devil Hills • Nags Head • Manteo • Rodanthe • Salvo

ABOUT THE EXPERT
Clark Olsen has been coming to the OBX for nearly 50 years. His wife Carol has deep roots in the OBX, and Clark likes to joke that she is related to half the county. Since he became a general contractor, Clark has done business in both North Carolina and Virginia, completing projects of all sizes for over 1,000 customers. His office is in Duck.
Clark has been a general contractor for nearly 25 years and working in the construction industry for almost 40 years. One of his first job experiences was at his family industrial rolling door business. The company was over 100 years old and made huge rolling doors, some of which have been operating at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard since before WWI. His family always built quality in every door that left the factory. Those values were instilled in him and guide how he approaches and builds every project. Clark doesn’t care about his work lasting through the warranty period, he builds it to last decades. That means he does not use inferior materials or methods in his construction.
Clark is an active member in the Outer Banks Home Builders Association, and his company is a member of the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce and the Outer Banks Association of Realtors. Clark has been involved with Habitat for Humanity in three cities and co-founded the chapter in our nation’s capital. In his spare time, Clark enjoys singing with the Outer Banks Chorus, fishing, birding and he holds various leadership roles at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church.
